How does a spell checker work?
A spell checker does three things
- First, it reads through the text finding individual words.
- Second, that word is checked against a list of already correct words.
- Third, if no match can be found then the spell checker looks for suggestions that are
similar in sound and structure to the word that is incorrect.
How does a grammar checker work?
A grammar checker looks for grammatical errors by reading your text. Grammar
checkers look for subject-verb agreement, missing punctuation, punctuation misuse,
and run on sentences. It provides suggestions based on the types of
grammar errors detected. It is most often used for research papers,
academic papers, and college entrance essays. However, grammar checking is sometimes too strict
for every day writing and you may not want to use one for text messages, blog comments, primary
and elementary school homework and other writing which is under less scrutiny.
How does a word and character counter work?
Our character counter counts the number of characters typed into the textarea. All
characters including whitespace, punctuation and numbers are counted. Our word counter counts
number of words, or grouping of letters or numbers, separated by whitespace. You can use this
character counter to check the number of words for reports, papers, essays, or to compose
the perfect 140 character Tweet or come up with the right 100 characters for your App Store

The dictionaries used by this site have been hand curated for use
in educational, professional and many informal settings. For example, our dictionary has eliminated most
improper and "naughty" words using our naughty word filter. This prevents inappropriate words from
appearing as a suggestion if you have a close misspelling or if a name is similar to a naughty word.
Note: the checker will ignore properly spelled naughty words but won't suggest them.
American and British Spelling Variations
This site includes dictionaries for both American English and British English spelling variations.
We also provide variations for Canadian and Australian spelling and vocabulary.
Common differences between American and British spelling deals with word suffixes. Words ending with "re" in British English usually end with "er" in American English. Words ending with "nce" in British English usually end with "nse" in American English. British English also borrows more words from other European languages and adopts their spelling. Other common suffix differences:
- British suffix "re" - American suffix "er"
- British suffix "nce" - American suffix "nse"
- British suffix "ise" - American suffix "ize"
- British suffix "our" - American suffix "or"
Another common spelling difference between American and British English is the "double L". In British English words such as "travelling", "quarrelling", etc. in American English tend to remove the "double L".
